A breath of fresh air at Ge.Fe. Polymers thanks to Sacmi

Peace has broken out between Ge.Fe. Polymers and residents in Toscanella di Dozza. The goal of getting the odours surrounding the facility back below the perception threshold is expected to be achieved by June 2018 when the plastic recycling company (part of the Alfagomma Group) finishes installing new active carbon filters and other devices.

Finding a solution to the problem involved close collaboration between Arpae Imola (the local environmental protection agency), the Municipality of Dozza and Ge.Fe. Polymers itself, with Sacmi technology playing a pivotal role. Sacmi, in fact, lent Arpae Imola (free of charge) the EOS 507F Ambiente 'electronic nose', developed for direct in-the-field monitoring of any unpleasant odours emitted by the plant.

The challenge faced by the local administrators and the environmental protection agency was to measure the odours 'objectively' (especially as there are no relevant national standards). The solution came from the Sacmi machine: after being “taught” to recognise the specific odour, it monitored the area around Ge.Fe Polymers from 15 June to 23 August 2016. Real-time reports were sent to Arpae Imola which, just a few months later, confirmed that the residents' complaints were objectively justified. Consequently, the company was asked to take the necessary countermeasures.

Effective teamwork with Ge.Fe Polymers has established that, from June 2018 onwards (following installation of the relative filters), the odours should be a thing of the past. For Sacmi, then, further confirmation of the soundness of a solution that has made us the partner of numerous regional environmental protection agencies: a success that also stems from the outstanding versatility of the machine, designed to work in all weathers and provide a stream of reliable, repeatable, stable long-term data.
